But what does Oppo think of Kei cars? Specifically importing one from Japan... I think I may have found my perfect match!

We hate them almost as much as we hate station wagons, manual transmissions, and brown.

You hate them?! How can you? They are SO CUTE!

There was a Kei Car documentary on Jalopnik not too long ago and I got a serious crush. I think I would import a Kei RV.

I'm seriously looking into importing one of these (Vivio RX-R) in the next couple of years :) THEY ARE SO ADORABLE!

This is cute. And this is the only kei car I like. Muy Macho!

How come? I mean I am not familiar with kei cars at all. Why did you choose the rx-r?

A Vivio GT-S? BTW I think inanimate objects are cute. Animals are the spawn of Satan (besides my pets)

Sporty (S/C I4 w/ AWD), Subaru, cheap to buy (You can find running AWD versions in Japan for 125,000 Yen or $1200 USD), and cheap to insure (660cc engine or 2/3rds of a liter). Also because it would be very unique ;)

Sounds good. What does it cost to import one and to make it roadworthy? What about parts? Can you fix these if something goes wrong?

How dare you. Inanimate objects are cuter than animate ones? You are a backwards person. You should get hemorrhoids on your belly button because you're so backwards.

things I like about Kei cars
still crazy awesome looks, random hood scoops and foglights. tiny economical engines but with turbos for the powa, and a bunch of them come with AWD and manual!
so enthusiast!

I would be importing a 1992 MY in late 2016 (for 1991 build codes) or early 2017. If you get a roadworthy one in Japan, all you have to do is clean it (undercarriage, engine bay, etc) ship it back with all the required documents, and get it inspected and registered by customs (for the 25 year law). Total cost with the car being $1500 USD would be about $3k if you went through these people. It could be higher or lower if you did it yourself though. Parts should be fairly easy to source (overnight them from Japan Yo! *F&F reference*) but if something goes wrong you just wait for replacement parts to be shipped in.

I like them, they're an efficient, practical solution to a specific regulatory challenge, and even if the regulations didn't exist, they would still be ideally suited to congested cities and high fuel prices.

If you want to talk about importing a car. I've done it. I do it well, and I do it legally. I may not be the cheapest guy in town, but I personally check over every car I import, instead of just picking up random cars from the auctions.

Ah, now I see why Tohru was "paging" you... yeah in a couple of years I am looking into importing a kei car (Specifically a sporty one, ala Honda Beat, Suzuki Cappucino, or Subaru Vivio RX-R to be even more specific) how much would it cost? You don't have to spend all that much time, just a ball park estimate would be helpful! Thanks if you can help!

The ABCs are going to be pricey, no matter what. They're already getting pricey. a Vivio? I don't know, all said and done, the price can vary significantly depending on where the car is in Japan, etc. Shipping will easily be over 4k with paperwork and all that. You're not allowed to collect a car at the port yourself, either, technically. There's a lot more involved than what you easily see.
Although actually, you want 4WD and turbo in an importable package? Might I recommend a Subaru Rex Supercharged 4WD? or a Suzuki Alto Works RS/R? both of those are importable at the moment, and can be found for decent prices.

They really can be cool cars. But buying from YHA is a HUGE risk, especially when it comes to a car you're going to have to pay shipping on. I actually go over and check out cars personally for you.

I guess I will have to keep that in mind (also keep in mind that I am a senior in HS who plans to buy a car in about 1-2 years)
